Happy mid-week update for grade 5! Reminder! September 25 - OPEN HOUSE 5-7 p.m. I hope to connect with many of you at this time September 29 - No school (Day) Sept 30 (National Truth and Reconciliation Day) October 2 - Photo Day Ask you child about what they learned about: Fall Equinox YouthLink Presentation and Cycber Safety Writing - assessment happening this week Math - assessment happening early next week P.E. and throwing strategies Did you know that you have to be 13 years of age to have social media accounts like Instagram, Tiktok and others...... Did you know that the average 10 year old spends 7 hours on screens a day..... Did you know that there are roughly 150 000 fake profiles out an about? Sept 21 - Upcoming Truth and Reconciliation Week

September 30 th is a National Day for Truth and Reconciliation meant to commemorate the history and legacy of Residential Schools in Canada. On Fri day, September 2 6 th, students are encouraged to wear an orange shirt or something else with orange to recognize Orange Shirt Day and the National Truth and Reconciliation Day.   Students will be engaging in learning next week to honor this important day. Through read a louds and activities, students will focus on understanding what they each need to feel safe and cared for at school and to consider this question: “What action can each member of our school community do to make sure every student feels safe and cared for at school, everyday?” This week is an opportunity for Northern Lights students and staff to come together in the spirit of reconciliation to show their support of a safe, respectful and caring school community.    Make sure you read our blog post next week to learn more about the activities and learning...

 Hello grade 5 Harris families! Thank you for all of the donations for the Terry Fox Run for cancer research. Here are some highlights from the week. Students learned about: International Dot Day and created their own unique dot art. Ask them what the main message was of the book is. Place value having a multiplication x10 pattern, wording patterns and symmetry on each side of the decimal. They continue to expand numbers to thousandths How to be a leader and hold a conversation with their grade 2 buddies outside Climate vs. Weather - (5 regions, affects on climate and patterns gloablly) How to put together skits for a presentation (healthy relationships) Upcoming Days September 22 - Community Walk to Storm Pond 1-2:20 p.m. September 24 - In-school grade 5 Youthlink presentations September 24 - Fun lunch September 25 - Open House September 26 - Orange Shirt Day - Ribbon Tying Event September 29 - 30 - No School Please reach out if you have any questions. Hello families of grade 5! Important Updates Sept 11 - Terry Fow Fundraising begins Sept 18 - Terry Fox Run Sept 24 - Youthlink Presentation for grade 5 Sept 26 - Orange Shirt Day Sept 29 and 30 - No school Oct 2 - Picture day This is what we got up to this week! Organizing for literacy centers including: BUDDY READING, INDEPENDENT READING, LITERACY GAMES MATH - LEARNING how to build read, write and understand BIG and SMALL numbers up to 1 million (1 000 000) and as small as 1 thousandth (0.001) Please review this with your kids at home. Our next step will be to add and subract numbers within this range. P.E. - Did you know that we have P.E. everyday Monday to Thursday? We continue to work on collaborative team building and following expected routines in the gym with Mr. Newton. Have a wonderful warm weekend.  Hello grade 5 families! This is what we got up to this week. Collaborative Team Building Challenge - SHIPWRECKED! Showcasing our identities (Brain Art Activity) Measuring our height and hands for our personal time capsules Reading MANY books to build community and establishing good reading routines Developing our classroom expectations to follow for the year Meeting with Mr. Newton for P.E. For next week: Practice all those basic facts as we are reviewing all of them Try to get into the habit of packing healthy and garbage-free lunches Review what the difference is between DISAGREEMENTS, RUDE, MEAN and BULLYING And.... Have a lovely weekend!!
