Hi Grade 5 families. Here are some highlights for the week!

Please stay tuned for information about the Science Fair that will be shared next week!

Math:

  • finished off our coordinate geometry unit - had a Show What You Know
  • practiced directions on a coordinate grid by giving directions to a peer with their eyes closed
  • created maps of communities on coordinate grids with directions
Writing and Science:
  • wrote a story about about a secret garden as a grade five writing sample to share at conferences
  • started learning about procedural writing and what makes for a good procedure
  • wrote about how to make a paper airplane and then flew some airplanes around =)
  • learned about some of the forces of flight in preparation for our fieldtrip in two weeks
Field Study and Buddies:
  • we went outside and noticed what was NATURAL in our school community and what was MAN-MADE in our school community and of the items found, what was POSITIVE to discover and what envoked NEGATIVE feelings
  • met up with our grade 2 buddies and helped them do a number search

Showcasing our identities (Brain Art Activity) Measuring our height and hands for our personal time capsules Reading MANY books to build community and establishing good reading routines Developing our classroom expectations to follow for the year Meeting with Mr. Newton for P.E. For next week: Practice all those basic facts as we are reviewing all of them Try to get into the habit of packing healthy and garbage-free lunches Review what the difference is between DISAGREEMENTS, RUDE, MEAN and BULLYING And.... Welcome to Grade 5!

Welcome !  We are so excited to be starting the 2025-2026 school year with you!  This year, our whole school will continue to use Blogger to make regular agenda posts.     To make it easier for you, you can add the blog right on to the home screen of your phone or iPad, or tablet.  We hope this makes communication between home and school easier and opens great conversations between you and your children .     The CBE and Mrs. Brinson will be communicating information to you through School Messenger email s titled , ‘Northern Lights News for ___ ”. Hello families of grade 5! Important Updates Sept 11 - Terry Fow Fundraising begins Sept 18 - Terry Fox Run Sept 24 - Youthlink Presentation for grade 5 Sept 26 - Orange Shirt Day Sept 29 and 30 - No school Oct 2 - Picture day This is what we got up to this week! Organizing for literacy centers including: BUDDY READING, INDEPENDENT READING, LITERACY GAMES MATH - LEARNING how to build read, write and understand BIG and SMALL numbers up to 1 million (1 000 000) and as small as 1 thousandth (0.001) Please review this with your kids at home. Our next step will be to add and subract numbers within this range. P.E. - Did you know that we have P.E. everyday Monday to Thursday? We continue to work on collaborative team building and following expected routines in the gym with Mr. Newton. Have a wonderful warm weekend.
