 Happy Winter Break!

I hope you all have a fabulous holidy and break with your family and friends. We will return to school in the new year on January 5, 2026.


Here are some highlights for the week:

SOCIAL STUDIES

  • Students had their first debate about whether ancient civilizations were better off developing near rivers or along coastlines Ask them about their position and reasoning.
READING
  • We finished our novel study Fish in a Tree! Please ask your child about dyslexia and what they lerned about the main character, Ally.
WRITING
  • Students completed a final procedural writing task. It will be assessed and handed back after the winter break. They also practiced their typing skills and made cards for a nearby seniors complex.
MATH
  • We are adding and subtracting numbers as large as one million, including decimals to hundredths (for money) and thousandths. (Check out the gingerbread task in the pictures. We also are practicing our basic facts which need to be mastered in order to do larger calculations. Please ask your child what their personal basic facts goal is so you can work on it at home. Lots of kids chose to improve their multiplication and division facts.
P.E. / SNOW
  • Oh and of course there was plenty of activitiy in the gym with Mr. Newton, and snow shoveling. JUST A FRIENDLY REMINDER NOT TO DROP YOUR STUDENTS OFF IN THE STAFF PARKING LOT. See the photos. =)

Welcome to Grade 5!

Welcome !  We are so excited to be starting the 2025-2026 school year with you!  This year, our whole school will continue to use Blogger to make regular agenda posts.     To make it easier for you, you can add the blog right on to the home screen of your phone or iPad, or tablet.  We hope this makes communication between home and school easier and opens great conversations between you and your children .     The CBE and Mrs. Brinson will be communicating information to you through School Messenger email s titled , ‘Northern Lights News for ___ ”. Important Updates Sept 11 - Terry Fow Fundraising begins Sept 18 - Terry Fox Run Sept 24 - Youthlink Presentation for grade 5 Sept 26 - Orange Shirt Day Sept 29 and 30 - No school Oct 2 - Picture day This is what we got up to this week! Organizing for literacy centers including: BUDDY READING, INDEPENDENT READING, LITERACY GAMES MATH - LEARNING how to build read, write and understand BIG and SMALL numbers up to 1 million (1 000 000) and as small as 1 thousandth (0.001) Please review this with your kids at home. Our next step will be to add and subract numbers within this range. P.E. - Did you know that we have P.E. everyday Monday to Thursday? We continue to work on collaborative team building and following expected routines in the gym with Mr. Newton. Have a wonderful warm weekend.
