February 2-5

Happy February Grade 5B Families,

Here are some important reminders and highlights for the week!

REMINDERS

February 12-13: No school - Teacher's Convention

February 16: No school - Family Day

February 17: Exciting Author Visit

February 24: In-school Science Fair Presentations

LEARNING HIGHLIGHTS THIS WEEK

P.E. is all about curling! Learning the skills, cheering each other on and even watching some of the Olympics!

Technology
 - We are exploring our new Chromebooks thanks to the money raised from Casino Funds! We also played on the new iPads on Friday!

Science - Our final task in ENERGY (our science unit) was to construct an object that floated. The hypothetical situation was, "We have to save endangered animals from a sinking island. What can you build in 30 minutes to save the animals?

Spelling / Grammar: After reading and writing stories over the last month, we have noticed that as a group we need some practice with APOSTROPHES. They are to be used when indicating "possession" or when "contracting" words.

Restart / Health: How can you say no in an assertive way? Well this is what students practiced. When they said no, they were THEN allowed to remove a Jenga piece. As always, we start these inspiring lessons with a Land Acknowledgement and this week, acknowledgement that it is Black History Month.

Math: We had a SWYK in Math (Show What You Know) and this was a concrete way to practice creating a stem and leaf chart to record data by place value.

Story Writing: Students are writing another story. As they are independent in writing a 5-7 paragraph story with plot and characterization, they are refining their editing and revising skills using a variety of tools. These tools include: thesaurus', dictionaries, in class charts for reference and editing checklists.

Have a wonderful weekend everyone!

Mrs. Harris
