January 12-16

 Hello families!

It was a great week and lots of learning.

Last week we did coding on Scratch! This is connected to our Computer Science curriculum in grade 5 science. We look forward to more coding on Fridays specifically.

In math, we did a check-in / SWYK which will be sent home next week with an assessed procedural writing task.

As for writing, the students are writing a lengthy story (about 5 paragraphs). We gave them a picture of an abandoned airplane which prompted some interesting plots! The students are familiar with how to use a thesaurus and LOVE looking for more exciting vocabulary (synonyms) to add to their writing.

On Thursday, we welcomed guest speakers from the RESTART program. This program is about health and wellness and provided by McMan Youth, Familiy and Community Services Association in Calgary. This week students learned about negative and positive labels and how to fit in vs. belonging.

Welcome to Grade 5!

Welcome !  We are so excited to be starting the 2025-2026 school year with you!  This year, our whole school will continue to use Blogger to make regular agenda posts.     To make it easier for you, you can add the blog right on to the home screen of your phone or iPad, or tablet.  We hope this makes communication between home and school easier and opens great conversations between you and your children .     The CBE and Mrs. Brinson will be communicating information to you through School Messenger email s titled , ‘Northern Lights News for ___ ”. Important Updates Sept 11 - Terry Fow Fundraising begins Sept 18 - Terry Fox Run Sept 24 - Youthlink Presentation for grade 5 Sept 26 - Orange Shirt Day Sept 29 and 30 - No school Oct 2 - Picture day This is what we got up to this week! Organizing for literacy centers including: BUDDY READING, INDEPENDENT READING, LITERACY GAMES MATH - LEARNING how to build read, write and understand BIG and SMALL numbers up to 1 million (1 000 000) and as small as 1 thousandth (0.001) Please review this with your kids at home. Our next step will be to add and subract numbers within this range. P.E. - Did you know that we have P.E. everyday Monday to Thursday? We continue to work on collaborative team building and following expected routines in the gym with Mr. Newton. Have a wonderful warm weekend.
